Summertime in the City – guest blogger Annette Presseau

This is a great time of year to get out and enjoy this beautiful weather because before you know it winter will be here!  The days are shorter now but there is still plenty of time to enjoy what summer has to offer.  In the summer I eat more seasonal fruit and lighter meals but very nutritious meals.  It’s always a good idea to look for seasonal fruits in the supermarket or just go to the local Farmers Market and enjoy the bounty!  I also love the feel of cotton clothes in the summer they breathe when it is hot outside.  One of my favorite things to do is go take a walk along the ocean it is such a beautiful sight to see and maybe I will put my feet in the water!  Sometimes I have a picnic on the beach.  This time of year is also a great time to pick fresh fruit like blueberries.  There are also plenty of free concerts in every town and city so get out and enjoy!

Activities to do in the heat of the summer

How about a picnic, and celebrate the joy of healthy eating outdoors. There’s nothing like a refreshing picnic packed with fresh fruits on a hot summer day.

Energize yourself and your family with a bike ride, hike or walk. It’s a great way to sneak in a workout for yourself while enjoying precious family time.

Visit a playground with the kids.  Do you remember how much fun it was when you were a kid to be at a playground?

How about picking up a new project?  What needs to be done around your house?  Maybe paint a room or remove some wallpaper or rearrange some furniture.  You can also check out some craft stores like Michaels and find a new project to do.

Concerts on the common!  Check out your local papers or town hall website for weekly concerts on the common you might be surprised by what is available to you.

How about a cooking class?  You could learn how to BBQ different foods on the grill or even a regular cooking class to update your skills.  There are plenty of classes out there to learn new things even at your local recreation department!

Photography or painting anyone?  Taking a art class or photography class and then you can go out and start taking pictures or painting scenes.

Have a cookout and invite your friends.  Cookouts are a lot of fun and are a great way to get out and enjoy the food and weather.

Sports games outside.  How about going to a baseball game or any other sports game and maybe start one yourself!

As I’m writing this I realize that I should write about what to do when it rains outside and usually when it rains outside I go to the local library or a museum.  Summer rains are really beautiful and if you are lucky you might just see a rainbow after the rain.  What do you do when it rains outside?

A Fruit for thought

How about the Papaya – the power fruit that was once called “the fruit of angels” by Christopher Columbus have you ever tried it?  Usually, I eat Cantaloupe and grapes in the summertime but papaya looks pretty good and I hear that it has a great taste.

There are several types of papayas. In the U.S., we typically see the Hawaiian papayas in our grocery stores. The Hawaiian papaya is approximately one pound, whereas the Mexican fruit can weigh up to 10 pounds!

Benefits

Papaya is one power-packed fruit, offering benefits to your whole body.

·Antioxidants. Papaya is known to be rich in antioxidants and can benefit the immune system because of its high levels of vitamin A and C.

·Fiber. High-fiber fruit can help improve cholesterol. One cup of chunked papaya contains 2.5 grams of fiber.

·Enzymes. The papain enzyme, found in papaya, aids in digestion. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect that speeds up the healing process.

How to Eat It

First, you should wait for the papaya to ripen fully so that it offers the most antioxidants. Papaya can be added to anything to give your meal a boost.

It’s National Smile Week!

Did you ever notice that you can’t be sad when you are smiling?  Smiling also makes you feel better and try spreading some smiles around today so when you pass by people that look stressed give them a smile you will be amazed how that will change a person.  We are drawn to people who smile. There is an attraction factor. We want to know a smiling person and feel good too.

Smiling Changes Our Mood

Next time you are feeling down, try putting on a smile. There’s a good chance you mood will change for the better. Smiling can trick the body into helping you change your mood.  When someone is smiling they lighten up a room and it shows that you are approachable, a smile changes the moods of others, and make things happier and also the smile is contagious.   I often notice that when I smile at someone they smile back at me.  A smiling person brings happiness with them.  Smile lots and you will draw people to you.

Smiling Relieves Stress

Stress can really show up in our faces. Smiling helps to prevent us from looking tired, worn down, and overwhelmed. When you are stressed, take time to put on a smile. The stress should be reduced and you’ll be better able to take action. Who would have thought that just by smiling it can help relieve stress just this afternoon I was feeling stressed and I logged onto Facebook and low and behold there was a smiley looking at me and it made me laugh so smile often and have a good laugh.  It is often said that laughter is the best medicine and I think that a smile is great too!

Smiling Helps you all over.

Smiling helps the immune system to work better. When you smile, immune function improves possibly because you are more relaxed and when you smile, there is a measurable reduction in your blood pressure. Give it a try if you have a blood pressure monitor at home. Sit for a few minutes, take a reading. Then smile for a minute and take another reading while still smiling. Do you notice a difference?  Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin. Together these three make us feel good. Smiling is a natural drug.

Smiling Lifts the Face and Makes You Look Younger

The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger. Don’t go for a face lift, just try smiling your way through the day — you’ll look younger and feel better.  Smiling people appear more confident, are more likely to be promoted, and more likely to be approached. Put on a smile at meetings and appointments and people will react to you differently.

Smiling Helps You Stay Positive

Try this test: Smile. Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It’s hard. When we smile our body is sending the rest of us a message that “Life is Good!” Stay away from depression, stress and worry by smiling.

Right now I have a big smile on my face and it’s making me feel a whole lot better.

Noise is everywhere.

There is too much noise in the world and I often see people with ear phones who are in their own world and don’t get me wrong electronics are great but what about stopping and looking at the stars at night or listening to a bird sing or children play?  The other day I heard a beautiful bird in my yard and the sound was just astounding and extremely beautiful and I wouldn’t have heard it if my radio or tv was on and I took the time to stop and just listen to it.  Sometimes we need to remember that our problems can be addressed if we just take a moment and stop and smell the roses.  There is just so much noise out there and maybe just maybe it will change your day just to stop, look and listen.

The ease of setting up blogs, Facebook profiles and other digital media channels is so easy and so cheap that literally everyone is doing it.  This means it is easy to get your fifteen minutes of fame, but really really hard to get famous so we spend hours and hours on the computer and I am guilty of this too and suddenly realize that I missed the day and spent too much time on the computer.  Sometimes I think of it as information overload while it is great to have it we must remember to break away from it.  So remember that there is life after computers so stop and talk to someone or just take a break and go for a walk if you can.  Today I stopped with the work I was doing and went to walk along the Merrimack River on the boardwalk and just sat there on a bench for a short time and noticed a beautiful butterfly bouncing around in the cool summer wind the wind kept throwing him away from the grass that he was trying to stay on but he kept on trying to get back to the blade of grass it was a beautiful sight to watch and I felt very relaxed and peaceful.

I would like to leave you with this poem:

“Give me the joys of summer,
Of Summer Queen so fair,
With wealth of lovely flowers
And fruits and sun-kissed air!

Talk not to me of winter
With ice and frost and snow,
Nor changing spring and autumn
When howling winds will blow.

No, I will take the joys
Of Summer every time,
So to this Queen of Seasons
I dedicate my rhyme.”
–  Winifred Sackville Stoner, Midsummer Joys

May you have a very healthy August with many blessings and are able to stop and smell the roses!
